The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte and Igreja do Colegio Sao Joao Evangelista. Take a break from the city and head to Valley of the Nuns and Madeira Explorers. Take a break from Funchal with a short trip to Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto in Canical, about 42 minutes away. There's still lots to do: see the interesting displays at Universo de Memorias Joao Carlos Abreu, get outside with Madeira Mountain Expeditions, enjoy the sand and surf at Praia de Garajau, and wander the streets of Zona Velha.

Ponta do Sol is a municipality in the southwestern coast of the island of Madeira, in the archipelago of Madeira. Ethnographic Museum and Igreja de Sao Bento are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Take a break from the city and head to Ponta do Sol Beach and Pico Ruivo do Paul da Serra. Venture out of the city with trips to Porto Moniz (Aquario da Madeira & My Guide Madeira).
