Founded in 1535 by Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro, Lima represents an interesting blend of modern attractions and preserved colonial architecture, much of it clustered in the World Heritage-listed city center.
Get some cultural insight at Basilica y Monasterio de Santo Domingo and Museo del Automovil Coleccion Nicolin. You'll discover tucked-away gems like San Isidro and Iglesia y Convento La Merced. Go for a jaunt from Lima to Callao to see Balneario La Punta about 30 minutes away. There's still lots to do: explore the striking landscape at Marcahuasi, contemplate the long history of Casa de Aliaga, admire the masterpieces at Museo MATE, and pause for some serene contemplation at Museo Convento San Francisco y Catacumbas.
