The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Explore hidden gems such as Uminonakamichi Seaside Park and Maizuru Park. Get out of town with these interesting Fukuoka side-trips: Imari Okawachiyama (in Imari), Karatsu (Former Takatori House & Nagoya Castle Ruins) and Yoshinogari Historical Park (in Yoshinogari-cho). There's lots more to do: head off the coast to Nokonoshima Island, take in the spiritual surroundings of Seirakuji Temple, stroll through Ikijima, and browse the different shops at JR Hakata City Amu Plaza Hakata.

A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Yakusugi Land and Wilson Stump. There's lots more to do: make a trip to Taikoiwa, go for a walk through Gejibe no Sato, head outdoors with Nagata Inakahama, and hike along Seibu Trail.

Other options: do a combination of train, flight, and taxi; or do a combination of train, ferry, and taxi. Plan for a bit warmer nights when traveling from Fukuoka in April since evenings lows in Yakushima-cho dip to 59°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 26th (Sun) to allow time to travel to Kagoshima.

Getting from Yakushima-cho to Kagoshima by combination of taxi and flight takes about 3.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of taxi and ferry. Traveling from Yakushima-cho in April, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit cooler in Kagoshima, with lows of 51°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 29th (Wed) to allow time to take a train to Kumamoto.
