The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Himeji Castle and Ono Residence will appeal to history buffs. Discover out-of-the-way places like Koko-en and Kinojo Iwaya. Venture out of the city with trips to Soja (Kinojo Castle & Bicchukokubunji Temple), Kobe (Kawasaki Good Times World, Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown), &more) and Ohashi House (in Kurashiki). And it doesn't end there: head outdoors with Mt Shosha hiking, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Tomoda Shrine, admire the striking features of Hiromine Shrine, and see the interesting displays at Japan Toy Museum.

Traveling by train from Hiroshima to Himeji takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of bus and train. Expect a daytime high around 20°C in April, and nighttime lows around 14°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Sat) to allow time to take a train to Kyoto.

Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Nijo Castle and Toji. Get some historical perspective at Kasuga Grand Shrine and Tofuku-ji Temple. You can take a train from Himeji to Kyoto in 1.5 hours. Another option is to drive. While traveling from Himeji, expect somewhat warmer days and about the same nights in Kyoto, ranging from highs of 29°C to lows of 17°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 6th (Wed) to allow enough time to drive to Kanazawa.

Kanazawa

You can drive from Kyoto to Kanazawa in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train. When traveling from Kyoto in May, plan for slightly colder days in Kanazawa, with highs around 26°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 15°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 9th (Sat) so you can travel to Tokyo.
