Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
On the 9th (Tue), indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens, look for gifts at Hida Bussankan, and then steep yourself in history at Takayama Jinya.

Known nationally as an industrial heartland, Nagoya boasts a far more cosmopolitan and cultural core than its reputation would lead you to believe.
Your day-by-day itinerary now includes Yamazaki River, Arimatsu no Machinami and JR Central Towers. On the 11th (Thu), appreciate the extensive heritage of Arimatsu no Machinami, then explore the activities along Yamazaki River, and then buy something for everyone on your list at JR Central Towers. Here are some ideas for day two: steep yourself in history at Nagoya Castle, wander the streets of Sakae, take a stroll through Osu Shopping Street, examine the collection at Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Atsuta Jingu Shrine, and finally look for all kinds of wild species at Cherry Trees along the Gojo River bank.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Mimurotoji Temple and Kennin-ji Temple will appeal to history buffs. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Shimogamo Jinja and Nanzen-ji Temple. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Byodoin (in Uji) and Ishiyamadera Temple (in Otsu). You can take a train from Nagoya to Kyoto in an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Nagoya in July, you will find days in Kyoto are a bit warmer (37°C), and nights are about the same (28°C). Wrap up your sightseeing on the 18th (Thu) early enough to take a train to Hiroshima.
