Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
For shopping fun, head to Dotombori or Minami (Namba). Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kasuga Grand Shrine and Kobe Harborland. Step out of Osaka to go to Nara and see Todai-ji Temple, which is approximately 1h 05 min away. There's still lots to do: find something for the whole family at Universal Studios Japan, examine the collection at Osaka Shiritsu Toyo Toji Museum, and steep yourself in history at Osaka Castle.

Fly from Hakodate to Osaka in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and train; or take a train. Plan for somewhat warmer temperatures traveling from Hakodate in October, with highs in Osaka at 26°C and lows at 17°C. Head to Mitsui Outlet Park Shiga Ryuo and Kyoto Station Buildingfor some retail therapy. Let the collections at Kyoto International Manga Museum and Kyoto National Museum capture your imagination. Change things up with a short trip to Omimaiko Beach in Otsu (about 1 hour away). Kyoto is just a short distance from Osaka. In October in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 27°C during the day and 18°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Sun) to allow time to take a train to Nagoya.
