The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
When in Kyoto, make a side trip to see Todai-ji Temple in Nara, approximately 1 hour away. And it doesn't end there: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, take in the pleasant sights at Arashiyama, and make a trip to Heian Shrine.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Other options are to fly; or drive. In August, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 39°C, while at night they dip to 29°C. You'll have a few hours on the 7th (Wed) to wrap things up before traveling to Osaka.

Traveling by train from Osaka to Nagoya takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. While traveling from Osaka, expect slightly colder days and about the same nights in Nagoya, ranging from highs of 34°C to lows of 28°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Mon) to allow enough time to travel to Fuefuki.
