Start off your visit on the 13th (Wed): get impressive views of Tajumulco Volcano.

Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Quetzaltenango: Retalhuleu (Xetulul Theme Park & Xocomil) and Panajachel (Hotel Atitlan Gardens & Reserva Natural Atitlán).
