On the bank of the Mtkvari River and at the foot of Trialeti mountain range, Tbilisi's location has given the city strategic significance since it was founded in the 5th century.
Step off the beaten path and head to Sioni Church and Uplistsiche Cave Town. Visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Narikala Fortress for their historical value. Take a break from Tbilisi with a short trip to Jvari Church in Mtskheta, about 38 minutes away.
