A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Bring the kids along to Jigokudani and Odori Park. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Sapporo: Royce' Chocolate World (in Chitose), Otaru Canal (in Otaru) and Oku no Yu (in Noboribetsu). And it doesn't end there: get engrossed in the history at Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura), get in on the family fun at Shiroi Koibito Park, take a stroll around Sapporo Underground Shopping Centre Aurora Town, and visit Susukino.

Traveling by flight from Sapporo to Tokyo takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. Traveling from Sapporo in December, expect nights in Tokyo to be a bit warmer, around 4°C, while days are much hotter, around 14°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Wed) to allow enough time to take a train to Nagano.

Near the confluence of the Chikuma and Sai rivers, Nagano combines historic sites with nearby forested alps dotted with shrines.
You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Snow Monkey Resorts and Zenko-ji Temple. Change things up with these side-trips from Nagano: Nozawaonsen-mura (Ogama & Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort) and Yamanouchi-machi (Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park & Onsen Resorts). Kick off your visit on the 24th (Sun): take some stellar pictures from Hakone Ropeway, admire the masterpieces at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, then admire the masterpieces at Hakone Museum of Art, then get some fabulous bargains at Gotemba Premium Outlets, and finally take in nature's colorful creations at Gotemba Kogen Toki no Sumika. On the 25th (Mon), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: don't miss a visit to Owaku-dani Valley, take in the spiritual surroundings of Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, then explore the activities along Lake Ashinoko, and finally take some stellar pictures from Mikuni Toge Observatory.

You can drive from Nagano to Hakone-machi in 3.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of train and bus; or take a bus. Plan for a bit warmer nights when traveling from Nagano in December since evenings lows in Hakone-machi dip to 5°C.
