Start off your visit on the 18th (Fri): take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Monserrate, then identify plant and animal life at Parque Ecologico Matarredonda, and then examine the collection at Gold Museum (Museo del Oro). Brussels, Belgium to Bogota is an approximately 13-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of shuttle and flight. Many visitors begin their Santa Marta holiday, surrounded by urban clutter and heavy traffic, expecting little from the city in terms of historical importance.
Visit Cristal Beach and Playa Blanca for some beach relaxation. Visiting Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona and Playa Grande will get you outdoors. Step out of Santa Marta to go to Aracataca and see Gabriel Garcia Marquez Museum, which is approximately 1h 40 min away. There's still lots to do: discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour, make a trip to Parque de Los Novios, steep yourself in history at Paseo El Camellon, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Iglesia San Jeronimo.

Fly from Medellin to Santa Marta in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. Prepare for somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Medellin in January: high temperatures in Santa Marta hover around 39°C and lows are around 27°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 31st (Thu) early enough to go by car to Isla Baru.
