Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
On the 12th (Sun), enjoy the sand and surf at Yonehara Beach, take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory, and then visit a coastal fixture at Cape Hirakubozaki. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: stop by Pinion Direct Shop, then enjoy breathtaking views from Maesedake Observation Site, then take a leisurely stroll along Nishi Pier, and finally enjoy the sand and surf at Kondoi Beach.

Taree, Australia to Ishigaki is an approximately 24-hour flight. The time zone difference when traveling from Taree to Ishigaki is minus 1 hour. Expect somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Taree in May: highs in Ishigaki hover around 34°C, while lows dip to 28°C. A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Attractions like Yonaha Maehama Beach and Toguchi no Hama make great kid-friendly stops. Step off the beaten path and head to Sunayama Beach and Scuba & Snorkeling. And it doesn't end there: kick back and relax at Aragusuku Beach, snap pictures at Irabu Bridge, visit a coastal fixture at Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse, and don't miss a visit to Boraga Limestone Cave.

You can do a combination of flight and taxi from Ishigaki to Miyakojima in 2 hours. Expect a daytime high around 32°C in May, and nighttime lows around 27°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Toji and Tofuku-ji Temple. Get some historical perspective at Nijo Castle and Kinkaku-ji. When in Kyoto, make a side trip to see Todai-ji Temple in Nara, approximately 1 hour away. Next up on the itinerary: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, wander the streets of Dotonbori, make a trip to Gion, and steep yourself in history at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine.

Traveling by combination of taxi, flight, and train from Miyakojima to Kyoto takes 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi, flight, tram, and train; or do a combination of taxi, flight, bus, and train. In May, Kyoto is a bit cooler than Miyakojima - with highs of 29°C and lows of 17°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Mon) so you can take a train to Hiroshima.

Take a train from Kyoto to Hiroshima in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In May in Hiroshima, expect temperatures between 28°C during the day and 18°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 22nd (Wed) early enough to drive to Matsue.

Matsue sits on the banks of the Ohashi-gawa river, channeling its waters through a series of canals and rivers that add much to the scenic aspect of the urban area.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Former Taisha Station and Yaegaki Shrine. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Adachi Museum of Art and Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Matsue: Izumo (Karakama Shrine, Hinomisaki Shrine, & more) and Tanabeke Dozogun (in Unnan). There's lots more to do: step into the grandiose world of Matsue Castle, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kamosu Shrine, and explore the world behind art at Shimane Art Museum.

You can drive from Hiroshima to Matsue in 2 hours. Other options are to take a bus; or take a train. In May, plan for daily highs up to 27°C, and evening lows to 17°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 25th (Sat) so you can travel to Tokyo.
