Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.

Miyakojima

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Take a break from the city and head to Yonaha Maehama Beach and Aragusuku Beach. You'll get in some beach time at Hora Gyoko no Hama Beach and Shigira Beach. Next up on the itinerary: tour the pleasant surroundings at Sunayama Beach and kick back and relax at Tomori Imugya Beach.

Getting from Miyakojima to Hiroshima by combination of flight and train takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: fly. Expect little chillier temperatures when traveling from Miyakojima in September; daily highs in Hiroshima reach 32°C and lows reach 24°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 20th (Fri) so you can catch the train to Kyoto.

Get some cultural insight at Gion and Nijo Castle. Get some historical perspective at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Sanjusangendo Temple. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Osaka (Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Dotonbori, & more) and Nara (Todai-ji Temple & Nara Park). Next up on the itinerary: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, look for gifts at Fuuka-Kimono, contemplate the long history of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, and get engrossed in the history at Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan.

Traveling by train from Hiroshima to Kyoto takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In September in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 33°C during the day and 23°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Tue) so you can take a train to Numazu.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Numazu in 3 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of flight and train. Expect slightly colder weather when traveling from Kyoto in September: highs in Numazu hover around 30°C, while lows dip to 26°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 27th (Fri) early enough to travel to Tokyo.
