Driving on the narrow streets can be difficult in La Rochelle so walking or biking will give you the best view of the pale stone buildings that give the Vieux Port, or old port, a distinctly Mediterranean quality.
Do your shopping at Mornac sur seudre and Marche Central de Royan. Visit Phare des Baleines and Porte des Deux Moulins for their historical value. You'll find plenty of places to visit near La Rochelle: Plage de la Pointe Espagnole (in La Tremblade), Association Hermione-La Fayette (in Rochefort) and Grottes du Regulus et des Fontaines (in Meschers-sur-Gironde). Visit Abbaye Notre-Dame de Senanque and Chateau de Lourmarin for their historical value. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue Market and Saumane Arts & Vin.
