As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.

Though the town of Sagres has roots in the Portuguese Age of Discovery, it is better known by visitors as a peaceful, rugged resort spot with great surfing beaches.
You'll get in some beach time at Arrifana Beach and Praia da Luz. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Praia do Beliche and Fort of Santo Antonio de Belixe. Step out of Sagres to go to Rogil and see Praia da Carriagem, which is approximately 50 minutes away. There's lots more to do: get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour, visit a coastal fixture at Cape Saint Vincent, kick back and relax at Praia da Cordoama, and contemplate the long history of Fortaleza de Sagres.
