A gateway to a sprawling and diverse national park, a center of Shinto spiritualism and place of Buddhist worship, an emblem of the riches and dominance of the Tokugawa shogunate: Nikko means many things to many people.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Nikko Futarasan Jinja Chugushi Shrine and Shirane Mountain. Escape the urban bustle at Nasu Highlands and Setoai-kyo Canyon. There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Onsenji Temple, look for all kinds of wild species at Kirifuri Highlands Kisuge Plain, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Nantai, and trek along Odashirogahara.

Traveling by train from Tokyo to Nikko takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. When traveling from Tokyo in April, plan for little chillier days and about the same nights in Nikko: temperatures range from 19°C by day to 15°C at night. You'll have a few hours on the 20th (Mon) to wrap things up before traveling to Hakone-machi.

Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
Visiting Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) and Mt. Kintoki will get you outdoors. Get a sense of the local culture at Arakura Fuji Sengen Jinja and Itchiku Kubota Art Museum. Step out of Hakone-machi with an excursion to Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine in Fujinomiya--about 1 hour away. And it doesn't end there: explore the world behind art at Okada Museum of Art, explore the galleries of Hakone Sekisho and Hakone Sekisho Museum, see the interesting displays at Lalique Museum Hakone, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Choanji Temple.

Drive from Nikko to Hakone-machi in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a train. When traveling from Nikko in April, plan for little chillier days in Hakone-machi, with highs around 15°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 13°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 23rd (Thu) to allow time to travel to Kyoto.

Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Tenryuji Temple for their historical value. Step off the beaten path and head to Kasuga Grand Shrine and Eikando Zenrinji Temple. Step out of Kyoto to go to Sakurai and see Hase-dera Temple, which is approximately 1h 35 min away. Next up on the itinerary: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, make a trip to Daigo-ji Temple, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Tofuku-ji Temple.

You can take a train from Hakone-machi to Kyoto in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or fly. Expect a bit warmer weather when traveling from Hakone-machi in April: highs in Kyoto hover around 22°C, while lows dip to 11°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 27th (Mon) so you can take a train to Hiroshima.
