The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Venture out of the city with trips to Kumamoto (Kumamoto Castle, Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, &more) and Dazaifu (Dazaifu Tenman-gu & Komyozen-ji Temple). And it doesn't end there: let the kids burn off some steam at Ohori Park, walk around Maizuru Park, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Tochoji Temple, and take in panoramic vistas at Fukuoka Tower.
