Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Cannaregio and Santa Maria dei Miracoli are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Cividale del Friuli - UNESCO World Heritage Centre and Natural History Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Venice side-trips: Grado (Basilica of Santa Eufemia & Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie), Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta e Chiesa di Santa Fosca (in Torcello) and Foro Romano di Aquileia (in Aquileia).
