Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Take a break from Johannesburg with a short trip to Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, about 46 minutes away. There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Apartheid Museum, get in on the family fun at Gold Reef City, steep yourself in history at Mandela House, and try to win big at Montecasino.
