Osaka

— 2 nights
Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Kick off your visit on the 24th (Sun): make a trip to Gion and then contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. On your second day here, find something for the whole family at Hirakata Park, then admire the striking features of Kuchu Teien Observatory, and then take a stroll through Dotombori District.

Kobe

— 16 nights
Walkable, small, and aesthetically charming, Kobe has served as Japan's first and premier international trading outpost since opening to trade with China in the mid-19th century.
Get some cultural insight at Otsuka Museum of Art and Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown). Museum-lovers will get to explore Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum and Kawasaki Good Times World. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kobe: Wakayama (Wakayama Castle, Takadasocho no Hi, &more), Naruto (Naruto Strait, Uzu no Michi, &more) and Himeji (Himeji Castle, Otemae Street, &more). There's lots more to do: take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Rokko, wander the streets of Kitano Ijinkan-gai, shop like a local with Kobe Harborland, and soak in some Japanese tradition at Arima Onsen.
