Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Hase-dera Temple and Nezu Shrine. Tokyo National Museum and KidZania Tokyo will appeal to museum buffs. Change things up with these side-trips from Tokyo: Mitsumine Shrine (in Chichibu), Narita (Naritasan Omote Sando & Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple) and Kamakura (Meigetsuin (Hydrangea Temple), Kencho-ji Temple, & more). Portland, USA to Tokyo is an approximately 15.5-hour combination of flight and train. You can also fly; or do a combination of train and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 17 hours traveling from Portland to Tokyo. Traveling from Portland in June, Tokyo is a bit warmer at night with lows of 67°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Fri) so you can take a train to Nagano.

Near the confluence of the Chikuma and Sai rivers, Nagano combines historic sites with nearby forested alps dotted with shrines.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Togakushi Shrine Okusha and Haruna Shrine. You'll explore and learn at Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa and Hokusai-kan. Venture out of the city with trips to Ganshoin Temple (in Obuse-machi), Kurumayama Highland (in Chino) and Matsumoto (Matsumoto City Art Museum & Kaichi Gakko Primary School). There's much more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Anrakuji Temple, head outdoors with Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort, pause for some serene contemplation at Karuizawa Kogen Church, and step into the grandiose world of Matsushiro Castle.

Take a train from Tokyo to Nagano in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In June, plan for daily highs up to 77°F, and evening lows to 65°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 16th (Tue) so you can travel to Hiroshima.

Get a sense of the local culture at Yamato Museum and JMSDF Kure Museum. Get some historical perspective at Itsukushima Shrine Torii and Mitaki Temple. Explore Hiroshima's surroundings by going to Senjokaku (in Hatsukaichi), Tsuwano-cho (Tsuwano Castle & Taikodani Inari Shrine) and Oyamazumi Shrine (in Imabari). And it doesn't end there: get engrossed in the history at Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, see the interesting displays at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, take in the spiritual surroundings of Tomo no Ura, and steep yourself in history at Peace Memorial Park - Hiroshima.

Traveling by combination of train and flight from Nagano to Hiroshima takes 6 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and flight; or drive. June in Hiroshima sees daily highs of 79°F and lows of 68°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Sat) to allow enough time to take a train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Tenryuji Temple and Toji. Visit Kinkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji Temple for their historical value. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Mimurotoji Temple (in Uji), Horyu-ji Temple (in Ikaruga-cho) and Nara (Toshodai-ji Temple & Kasuga Grand Shrine). There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Eikando Zenrinji Temple, contemplate the long history of Kifune Shrine, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, and take in the awesome beauty at Mt. You can take a train from Hiroshima to Kyoto in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In June in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 81°F during the day and 67°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Wed) to allow enough time to travel back home.
