Traveling by car from Matsumoto to Nara takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Prepare for somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Matsumoto in August: high temperatures in Nara hover around 38°C and lows are around 32°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 13th (Thu) so you can catch the train to Kyoto.
