Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
Explore Quetzaltenango's surroundings by going to Hotel Atitlan Gardens (in Panajachel), Fuentes Georginas (in Zunil) and Chichi Cemetery (in Chichicastenango). There's still lots to do: get impressive views of Santa Maria Volcano, admire the landmark architecture of Teatro Municipal de Quetzaltenango, see the interesting displays at Lxkik Maya Museum, and stop by Ketzali Accessories.

You can drive from Retalhuleu to Quetzaltenango in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. Prepare for colder weather when traveling from Retalhuleu in August: high temperatures in Quetzaltenango hover around 25°C and lows are around 11°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 6th (Tue) early enough to drive to Lanquin.
