The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Fukuoka City Museum and Munakata Shrine. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Tochoji Temple and Miyajidake Shrine. Explore Fukuoka's surroundings by going to Onojo - Chikuzenkoku (in Onojo), Nanzoin (in Sasaguri-machi) and Dazaifu (Komyozen-ji Temple, Dazaifu Tenman-gu, &more). You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Yutoku Inari Shrine and Fukoji temple. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Shimabara Castle and Miyanohara-ko Historic Site. Get out of town with these interesting Omuta side-trips: Furogu (in Okawa), Onsen Resorts (in Unzen) and Former Residence of Aoki Shigeru (in Kurume).
