Saga is the capital city of Saga Prefecture, located on the island of Kyushu, Japan.Saga was the capital of Saga Domain in the Edo period, and largest city of former Hizen Province.As of February 28, 2017, the city has an estimated population of 234,453 and a population density of 543 persons per km². Ishibashi Bunka Center and Dazaifu Tenman-gu are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Chikuzenmachi Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum and Saga Shrine. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Saga: Kora Taisha Shrine (in Kurume), Nyoirinji Temple (in Ogori) and Catholic Imamura Church (in Tachiarai-machi). There's lots more to do: don't miss a visit to Saga Castle Shachinomon & Tsuzuki Yagura, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Matsubara Shrine, see the interesting displays at Saga Balloon Museum, and steep yourself in history at House of Yamaguchi Family.

Stockholm, Sweden to Saga is an approximately 18-hour combination of flight and car. The time zone changes from Central European Standard Time (CET) to Japan Standard Time (JST), which is usually an 8 hour difference. Traveling from Stockholm in June, things will get somewhat warmer in Saga: highs are around 30°C and lows about 22°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Tue) early enough to drive to Shimabara.

Shimabara

Shimabara is a city located on the north-eastern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula, facing Ariake Bay in the east and Mount Unzen (including Fugendake) in the west, in Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan.As of October 1, 2016, the city has an estimated population of 44,936 and a population density of 540 persons per km². You'll discover tucked-away gems like Shimabara Castle and Gamadasu Dome (Mt. Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall). Visit Samurai Houses and Honkoji Temple for their historical value. Get out of town with these interesting Shimabara side-trips: Minamishimabara (Hara Castle Ruin, Kuchinotsu Folk History Museum, &more). There's much more to do: steep yourself in history at Torita House, don't miss a visit to Jishoro, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kotoji Temple, and get engrossed in the history at Tourist Restoration Memorial Museum.

You can drive from Saga to Shimabara in 2.5 hours. In June in Shimabara, expect temperatures between 30°C during the day and 22°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel to Nakatsu.
