Durango

— 18 nights
Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Take a break from the city and head to Purgatory Resort and Piedra River Trail. Visit Long House and Mayflower Gold Mill for their historical value. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Durango: Mesa Verde National Park (Far View Sites, Ruins Road, &more), Ouray (Baby Bath Tubs Trail, Perimeter Trail, &more) and Ridgway Visitors Center and Railroad Museum (in Ridgway). Next up on the itinerary: get a taste of life in the country at Majestic Dude Ranch, explore the ancient world of Towac Visitor Center, grab your bike and head to Alpine Loop, and look for gifts at Honeyville.

For maps, photos, reviews, and tourist information, read our Durango trip itinerary planner.

In June, plan for daily highs up to 85°F, and evening lows to 44°F.
