Navigating through a maze of colorful streets winding up and down steep hills remains an integral part of any Valparaiso tour.

Step out of Santiago with an excursion to Concha y Toro in Pirque--about 38 minutes away. A city of 40,000 people, Ancud was the capital of Chiloe Archipelago until it was superseded by the city of Castro in 1982.
Kick off your visit on the 5th (Thu): enjoy the sea views from Faro Corona en Chiloe, then examine the collection at Museo Regional de Ancud, and then head off the coast to Isla Aucar. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 6th (Fri): get outside with Pinguineras and then identify plant and animal life at Chiloe Island Penguin Colony.

Getting from Santiago to Ancud by combination of flight and bus takes about 6.5 hours. Other options: take a bus. In December in Ancud, expect temperatures between 20°C during the day and 9°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 6th (Fri) to allow time to take a bus to Castro.
