Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji. Let the collections at Kyoto National Museum and Jikko Cutlery capture your imagination. Venture out of the city with trips to Kyoto (Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan, Gion, & more), Higashiyama (Kiyomizu-dera Temple & Sanjusangendo Temple) and Nijo Castle (in Nakagyo). Next up on the itinerary: wander the streets of Dotonbori, examine the collection at Osaka Shiritsu Toyo Toji Museum, and explore the historical opulence of Osaka Castle.
