Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Step off the beaten path and head to Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira and Casa do Infante. MMIPO - Museu da Misericordia do Porto and Alberto Sampaio Museum will appeal to museum buffs. Explore Porto's surroundings by going to Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolacao e Santos Passos (in Guimaraes) and Braga (Igreja da Misericordia de Braga & Arco da Porta Nova). There's much more to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja de Santo Antonio dos Congregados, steep yourself in history at Fortress Sao Joao Baptista, don't miss a visit to She Changes (The Anemone), and admire the landmark architecture of Casa da Prelada.
