Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
Start off your visit on the 8th (Thu): admire the masterpieces at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, examine the collection at Lalique Museum Hakone, then explore the world behind art at Narukawa Art Museum, and finally trek along Hakone Stone‐paved Road. Here are some ideas for day two: admire the masterpieces at Hakone Museum of Art, explore the world behind art at Okada Museum of Art, then explore the activities along Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), and finally take an in-depth tour of Hakone Shrine Homotsuden.

Tokyo to Hakone-machi is an approximately 2-hour train ride. You can also drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Tokyo in August, plan for slightly colder days in Hakone-machi, with highs around 29°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 26°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Sat) to allow time to travel to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Kyoto Railway Museum and Miho Museum. Get outdoors at Mt. Kurama and Kaizu Osaki. There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, take in the local highlights with Walking tours, steep yourself in history at Ninna-ji Temple, and step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle.

You can take a train from Hakone-machi to Kyoto in 4 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of flight and train. Traveling from Hakone-machi in August, expect nights in Kyoto to be about the same, around 29°C, while days are a bit warmer, around 39°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 14th (Wed) to allow enough time to take a train to Osaka.

Osaka is just a stone's throw from Kyoto. In August, plan for daily highs up to 39°C, and evening lows to 29°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 17th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel to Tokyo.
