Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Get some historical perspective at Koyasan Okunoin and Kashihara Jingu. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine and Horyu-ji Temple. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Nara (Kofuku-ji Temple, Nigatsu-do Temple, &more), Koyasan Danjo Garan (in Koya-cho) and Hase-dera Temple (in Sakurai). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Nishinomiya Shrine, soak in some Japanese tradition at Arima Onsen, get a taste of the local shopping with Dotombori District, and explore the historical opulence of Himeji Castle.
