The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get outdoors at Mt. Yoshino and Mt. Wakakusa. Discover out-of-the-way places like Miho Museum and Ninna-ji Temple. The city of Hatsukaichi developed from a small market town, frequented by passing samurais during the Edo period.
On the 12th (Sun), take in the views from Kintaikyo Bridge, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Daishoin Temple, and then contemplate the long history of Itsukushima Shrine Torii. Here are some ideas for day two: step off the mainland to explore Miyajima, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Senjokaku, and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Araebisu Shrine.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Hatsukaichi in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 67°F in April, and nighttime lows around 52°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 13th (Mon) so you can catch the train to Takayama.

Take a train from Hatsukaichi to Takayama in 6.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and flight. Traveling from Hatsukaichi in April, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit cooler in Takayama, with lows of 47°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 17th (Fri) early enough to go by car to Tokyo.
