You'll find plenty of places to visit near Tokyo: Kamakura (Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine & Kōtoku-in). There's much more to do: make a trip to Meiji Jingu Shrine, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sensō-ji, wander the streets of Odaiba, and take in nature's colorful creations at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

Auckland, New Zealand to Tokyo is an approximately 14.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. The time zone difference moving from New Zealand Standard Time to Japan Standard Time is minus 3 hours. Traveling from Auckland in August, expect Tokyo to be much warmer, temps between 36°C and 28°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Tue) so you can take a train to Kanazawa.

Traveling by train from Tokyo to Kanazawa takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. In August, plan for daily highs up to 35°C, and evening lows to 27°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 22nd (Thu) so you can catch the train to Himeji.
