Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli and Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica. Visit Colosseum and Vatican Museums for their historical value. There's much more to do: explore the ancient world of Pantheon, pause for some serene contemplation at St. Peter's Basilica, contemplate the long history of Palatine Hill, and get to know the fascinating history of Piazza Navona.

Sydney, Australia to Rome is an approximately 24-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of bus and flight.
