A city of 40,000 people, Ancud was the capital of Chiloe Archipelago until it was superseded by the city of Castro in 1982.
Change things up with a short trip to Isla Aucar in Quemchi (about 58 minutes away). There's lots more to do: see the interesting displays at Museo Regional de Ancud, pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral de Ancud, visit a coastal fixture at Faro Corona en Chiloe, and contemplate the long history of Fuerte Ahui.
