Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine and Kencho-ji Temple. Do some cultural sightseeing at Pola Museum of Art and Nezu Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Tokyo side-trips: Hakone Shisseikaen (in Hakone-machi), Kamakura (Hokokuji Temple (Takedera Temple), Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, &more) and Saitama (Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Shrine & The Railway Museum). And it doesn't end there: admire the masterpieces at National Museum of Western Art, take a stroll through Odaiba District, steep yourself in history at Nezu Shrine, and stop by Yanaka District.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple for their historical value. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Tenryuji Temple and Kennin-ji Temple. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Mimurotoji Temple (in Uji) and Nara (Nigatsu-do Temple, Nara Park, &more). There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Tofuku-ji Temple, visit Pontocho District, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Kamigamo Shrine.
