Enjoying some of the warmest weather on Japan's main islands, Miyazaki thrived as a resort town in the 1980s, with hotels, beaches, and seafood restaurants galore.

The city of Kirishima, established in 2005 by the merging of several smaller towns, makes a popular base for exploring the volcanic mountain range of the surrounding national park.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Mt. Shinmoe and Kirishima Higashi Shrine. Explore Kirishima's surroundings by going to Maruike Pond Spring Water at the foot of Mt. Kirishima (in Yusui-cho), Aira (Kamounobuke House, Nihonichi no Kyoju Kamo no Okusu, &more) and Sano Shrine (in Takaharu-cho). Drive from Nichinan to Kirishima in 2 hours. Traveling from Nichinan in April, expect a bit cooler with lows of 12°C in Kirishima. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 13th (Mon) early enough to take a train to Kumamoto.

You can take a train from Kirishima to Kumamoto in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 23°C in April, and nighttime lows around 12°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Thu) to allow enough time to drive to Takachiho-cho.

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.

Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 16th (Thu) to allow time for the car ride to Yufu.

Getting from Takachiho-cho to Yufu by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: do a combination of bus and train; or take a bus. Traveling from Takachiho-cho in April, expect nights in Yufu to be about the same, around 13°C, while days are slightly colder, around 20°C. You'll have a few hours on the 18th (Sat) to wrap things up before traveling to Unzen.

You can drive from Yufu to Unzen in 3.5 hours. In April, plan for daily highs up to 22°C, and evening lows to 14°C. On the 20th (Mon), you'll have the morning to explore before heading off to Kitakyushu.

Kitakyushu

An important gateway for trade and travel between Honshu and Kyushu, the city of Kitakyushu has an old industrial waterfront and provides access to a number of natural sites across the wider region.
