City of Yatai

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Fukuoka: Dazaifu (Rainbow Tunnel, Tenkai Inari Shrine, &more), Shimonoseki (Karato market, Kanmon Bridge, &more) and Sasaguri-machi (Komenoyama Obsevatory & Nanzoin). Next up on the itinerary: take in the pleasant sights at Ohori Park, stop by Mojiko Retro, buy something for everyone on your list at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, and walk around Maizuru Park.

Centered around its castle, Kumamoto stands as a historic city with plenty of modern-day appeal to add to the mix.
Kick off your visit on the 13th (Fri): get to know the fascinating history of Kumamoto Castle, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kato Shrine, explore the world behind art at Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, then stroll around Suizenji Jojuen Garden, then buy something for everyone on your list at Shimotori Shotengai, and finally get engrossed in the history at Sakuranobaba Johsaien. Traveling by train from Fukuoka to Kumamoto takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In March, plan for daily highs up to 17°C, and evening lows to 6°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 14th (Sat) to allow enough time to take a train to Beppu.

The resort town of Beppu puts the geothermal nature of the region to good use.
Start off your visit on the 15th (Sun): soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens, witness a stunning natural landmark at Umi Jigoku, take in the natural beauty of Kamado Jigoku, witness a stunning natural landmark at Hells of Beppu, then don't miss a visit to Jigokumushikobo Kannawa, and finally contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Kinrin. On the 16th (Mon), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: snap pictures at Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Bridge, then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Yufu, and then take in the natural beauty of Tsurunoyu.

You can take a train from Kumamoto to Beppu in 3 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. March in Beppu sees daily highs of 15°C and lows of 7°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 17th (Tue) to allow time for the car ride to Nagasaki.

Nagasaki

City of Peace

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II. This history, of course, remains important to the city, its inhabitants, and to the wider world, and should not be forgotten.
Take a break from Nagasaki with a short trip to Huis Ten Bosch in Sasebo, about 1h 15 min away. There's much more to do: take an in-depth tour of Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, see the interesting displays at Dejima, take in the pleasant sights at Mountain of the Cross, and stroll around Nagasaki Peace Park.
