The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Nijino Matsubara and Tsutsukihama Beach. Get some historical perspective at Dazaifu Tenman-gu and Tochoji Temple. Explore Fukuoka's surroundings by going to Kurume (Kyoho Winery & Fukuoka Science Museum), Ito Sai Sai (in Itoshima) and Miyajihama Beach (in Fukutsu). There's still lots to do: buy something for everyone on your list at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, admire nature's wide array of creatures at Marine World umino-nakamichi, admire the natural beauty at Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, and take a stroll through Nishijin Shopping District.

If you are flying in from Malaysia, the closest major aiport is Fukuoka Airport. In November, plan for daily highs up to 20°C, and evening lows to 11°C. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 24th (Sun) to allow enough time to take a train to Kumamoto.

Centered around its castle, Kumamoto stands as a historic city with plenty of modern-day appeal to add to the mix.
Visit Kumamoto Castle and Amano Yasugawara for their historical value. Bring the kids along to Aso Farm land and Cuddly Dominion. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kumamoto: Kikuchi Gorge (in Kikuchi), Aso (Daikanbo & Kusasenrigahama) and Takachiho-cho (Amanomanai, Takachiho Gorge, &more). There's still lots to do: indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kato Shrine, take an in-depth tour of Sakuranobaba Johsaien, and look for all kinds of wild species at Wildlife Areas.

Getting from Fukuoka to Kumamoto by train takes about an hour. Other options: drive; or take a bus. In November, plan for daily highs up to 19°C, and evening lows to 10°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Thu) to allow time to take a train to Kitakyushu.

An important gateway for trade and travel between Honshu and Kyushu, the city of Kitakyushu has an old industrial waterfront and provides access to a number of natural sites across the wider region.
Get in touch with nature at Akiyoshido and Kanmon Kaikyo. Family-friendly places like Old Ito Denemon House and Kaikyokan will thrill your kids. Get out of town with these interesting Kitakyushu side-trips: Akiyoshidai Observation Trail (in Mine), Karato market (in Shimonoseki) and Shoin Shrine (in Hagi). There's much more to do: take a stroll through Mojiko Retro, examine the collection at Kyushu Railway History Museum, make a trip to Kokura Castle, and contemplate the long history of Old Kyushu Railroad Head Quarters.

Traveling by train from Kumamoto to Kitakyushu takes an hour. Alternatively, you can drive. In November, daily temperatures in Kitakyushu can reach 19°C, while at night they dip to 13°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 1st (Sun) so you can catch the train to Beppu.

On the 2nd (Mon), admire nature's wide array of creatures at Oita Marine Palace Aquarium Umitamago, make a trip to Jigokumushikobo Kannawa, witness a stunning natural landmark at Hells of Beppu, witness a stunning natural landmark at Umi Jigoku, then learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at African Safari, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Usajingu Shrine. Keep things going the next day: explore the activities along Lake Kinrin, buy something for everyone on your list at JR Oita City, then meet the residents at Takasakiyama Nature Zoo, then look for gifts at Angel Kimono Rental Beppu, and finally soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens.

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Kick off your visit on the 4th (Wed): take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Inasa, walk around Nagasaki Peace Park, get engrossed in the history at Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, then take in the views from Megane Bridge, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Sōfuku-ji Temple, and finally don't miss a visit to Shinchi Chinatown. Here are some ideas for day two: examine the collection at Dejima, tour the pleasant surroundings at Glover Garden, pause for some serene contemplation at Ōura Church, then head off the coast to Hashima Island, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Catholic Church Hongouchi.
