A spiritual center of Shintoism, Ise stands as a traditional city where visitors can see the roots of Japanese culture in a number of well-preserved natural and historic sites.
On the 1st (Thu), get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Toba Aquarium, take in the spiritual surroundings of Sarutahiko Shrine, then contemplate the long history of Oharai-machi, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Ise Shrine Geku.

Tokyo to Ise is an approximately 4.5-hour train ride. You can also drive; or do a combination of flight and train. Traveling from Tokyo in April, you will find days in Ise are little chillier (19°C), and nights are somewhat warmer (18°C). Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Thu) to allow enough time to drive to Nachikatsura-cho.

Nachikatsura-cho

The town of Nachikatsuura-cho wows visitors with its superlative landscape and impressive cultural attractions.
Start off your visit on the 2nd (Fri): take in the spiritual surroundings of Kamikura Shrine, take in the spiritual surroundings of Seigantoji Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kumano Nachi Taisha, then take in the dramatic scenery at Nachi Mitaki Falls, and finally don't miss a visit to Daimonzaka.

You can drive from Ise to Nachikatsura-cho in 2 hours. Other options are to take a train; or do a combination of train and bus. In April in Nachikatsura-cho, expect temperatures between 22°C during the day and 17°C at night. On the 3rd (Sat), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Iriomote-jima.

Iriomote-jima

Taketomicho Iriomote-Jima stands as the second largest island in Okinawa.
Start off your visit on the 4th (Sun): take in the dramatic scenery at Pinaisara Falls, scramble along the landscape with a canyoning and rapelling tour, and then head off the coast to Iriomote Island. Traveling by combination of train, flight, and ferry from Nachikatsura-cho to Iriomote-jima takes 10.5 hours. Traveling from Nachikatsura-cho in April, expect Iriomote-jima to be a bit warmer, temps between 30°C and 24°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 5th (Mon) early enough to travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.

You can ride a ferry from Iriomote-jima to Ishigaki in 2 hours. Expect a daytime high around 30°C in April, and nighttime lows around 24°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel to Miyakojima.

Miyakojima

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.

Fly from Ishigaki to Miyakojima in 2.5 hours. In April, plan for daily highs up to 29°C, and evening lows to 23°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 11th (Sun) early enough to travel to Motobu-cho.

Motobu-cho

Formed by the gradual merging of several old fishing villages, today the island town of Motobu-cho boasts paradisal beaches of white sand, clear waters, and a rich array of wildlife.
Explore hidden gems such as Kafu Banta and Okuma Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Katsuren Castle Ruins (in Uruma), Kunigami-son (Daisekirinzan & Cape Hedo) and Kouri Beach (in Nakijin-son). You can fly from Miyakojima to Motobu-cho in 5.5 hours. Traveling from Miyakojima in April, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be little chillier in Motobu-cho, with lows of 20°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Wed) early enough to travel to Yakushima-cho.

Yakushima-cho

A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.

Takachiho-cho

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.

Expect slightly colder evenings in Takachiho-cho when traveling from Yakushima-cho in April, with lows around 12°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 17th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel back home.
