You'll discover tucked-away gems like Ueno District and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Take a break from the city and head to Pola Museum of Art and Odaiba Kaihin Koen (Odaiba Seaside Park). Explore Tokyo's surroundings by going to Kencho-ji Temple (in Kamakura), Saitama (Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Shrine & The Railway Museum) and Oyama Afuri Shrine (in Isehara). Toshodai-ji Temple and Dotombori District are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Omiwa Shrine and Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Osaka: Nigatsu-do Temple (in Nara) and Hase-dera Temple (in Sakurai). Next up on the itinerary: have fun and explore at Kids Plaza Osaka, get engrossed in the history at Osaka Museum of History, enjoy breathtaking views from Harukas 300 Observation Deck, and shop like a local with Midosuji Street.

Getting from Tokyo to Osaka by train takes about 3.5 hours. Other options: fly; or drive. In December, daytime highs in Osaka are 13°C, while nighttime lows are 4°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 29th (Sun) so you can catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Visit Shimogamo Jinja and Nijo Castle for their historical value.
