Grapple with history and appreciate modernity in Hiroshima, a city known around the world for its tragic past and inspiring rebirth.
Visit Former Naval Academy and Miyama Shrine for their historical value. For shopping fun, head to Ekie or Hondori Shopping Street. Get out of town with these interesting Hiroshima side-trips: Jyodo Shrine (in Onomichi), Paddle Park (in Hatsukaichi) and Sankeien (in Mihara). There's lots more to do: contemplate the long history of Former Bank of Japan Hiroshima, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Ogonzan, pause for some photo ops at Memorial Tower to the Mobilized Students, and take in nature's colorful creations at Aromatic Forest Park.

The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 5th (Sun): take in the spiritual surroundings of Ishino Hoden Oishi Shrine, steep yourself in history at Yoneda Taishiji Temple, see the interesting displays at Japan Toy Museum, thenlook for gifts at Yamasa Kamaboko Yumesenkan, thensteep yourself in history at Bizenmaru, and finally contemplate the long history of Nishi no Maru.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Step off the beaten path and head to Hase-dera Temple and Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. For shopping fun, head to Kyoto Kimono Rental Sakura or Kyoto Tower Sando. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Yoshino-cho (Kinpusenji Temple & Mt. Yoshino), Yamazaki River (in Nagoya) and Kashihara Jingu (in Kashihara). The adventure continues: take in the spiritual surroundings of Honen-in, steep yourself in history at Keage Incline, and make a trip to Yasakanoto.

An old castle town largely unspoiled during World War II, Kanazawa features well-preserved architecture spread across a range of districts.
Get outdoors at Ski Jam Katsuyama and Bijodaira. Get a sense of the local culture at Inami Betsuin Zuisen-ji Temple and Kanazawa Phonograph Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Kanazawa side-trips: Hakusan Shrine (Heisenji-Hakusan Shrine) (in Katsuyama), Yatsuo no Machinami (in Toyama) and Iwase Family (in Nanto). There's still lots to do: stop by Amanatto Kawamura, take in the spiritual surroundings of Daijoji Temple, pause for some serene contemplation at Kanazawa Catholic Church, and take a stroll around Shiinoki Cultural Complex Ishikawa Prefecture.

You can drive from Kyoto to Kanazawa in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Kyoto in April, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit cooler in Kanazawa, with lows of °C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 13th (Mon) early enough to catch the train to Tokyo.
