The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan (in Osaka) and Dotombori (Dotombori District & Naniwa Meibutsu Ichibirian Dotombori). There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, don't miss a visit to Fushimi Sake Village, and wander the streets of Gion.

The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Kick off your visit on the 25th (Fri): contemplate the long history of Nishi no Maru, steep yourself in history at Himeji Castle, then take in nature's colorful creations at Koko-en, and finally contemplate the long history of Yoneda Taishiji Temple. Here are some ideas for day two: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Takamikura, then kick back and relax at Matsue Swimming Beach, then take in the views from Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, and finally admire the natural beauty at Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens.
