City of Yatai

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Venture out of the city with trips to Nanzoin (in Sasaguri-machi), Dazaifu (Tenkai Inari Shrine, Dazaifu Tenman-gu, &more) and Itoshima (Hirabaru Historical Park & Kobo Tottan). There's much more to do: take in the pleasant sights at Ohori Park, take in the spiritual surroundings of Tochoji Temple, admire the landmark architecture of Hakata Station, and stroll around Maizuru Park.

Kitakyushu

An important gateway for trade and travel between Honshu and Kyushu, the city of Kitakyushu has an old industrial waterfront and provides access to a number of natural sites across the wider region.
Take a break from Kitakyushu with a short trip to Old Kurauchi Residence in Chikujo-gun, about 50 minutes away. The adventure continues: wander the streets of Mojiko Retro, get a new perspective on nature at Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History, admire the striking features of Old Moji Zeikan, and take in panoramic vistas at Mojiko Retro Tenbowsitsu.
