The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Explore hidden gems such as Aviario Nacional de Colombia and Playa Puntilla. Barrio Getsemani and Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas will appeal to history buffs. Step out of Cartagena with an excursion to Playa Blanca in Isla Baru--about 1h 5 min away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Walled City of Cartagena, gain insight at Plaza Santo Domingo, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver, and take an in-depth tour of Museo del Oro Zenu.
