Palm-fringed beaches with golden sand, turquoise water, and a colorful coral reef are enough to draw any beachgoer to Unawatuna, but there's plenty to do off the beach here as well.
Step off the beaten path and head to Handunugoda Tea Estate and Ahungalla Beach. Take a break from the city and head to Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project and Sea Turtle Protection Association. Go for a jaunt from Unawatuna to Mirissa to see Spas & Wellness about 48 minutes away. There's still lots to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Dutch Reformed Church, see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, look for gifts at Stick No Bills Poster Gallery, and don't miss a visit to Japanese Peace Pagoda.
