Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Change things up with a short trip to Eilean Donan Castle in Kyle of Lochalsh (about 1h 25 min away). There's much more to do: examine the collection at West Highland Museum, admire the sheer force of Steall Waterfall, and steep yourself in history at Glenfinnan Monument.

Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Dunrobin Castle and Gardens and Cawdor Castle. Museum-lovers will get to explore Glenfiddich Distillery and Dufftown Whisky and Heritage Centre. Venture out of the city with trips to Cairngorm Mountain (in Aviemore), RZSS Highland Wildlife Park (in Kingussie) and Blair Castle and Hercules Gardens (in Blair Atholl). There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Fort George, look for all kinds of wild species at Loch Garten Nature Reserve, delve into the distant past at Clava Cairns, and make a trip to Culloden Battlefield.
