Unvanquished City

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
For shopping fun, head to Mercado Bom Sucesso or Galerias Lumiere. Bom Jesus do Monte and Centro Historico de Guimaraes will appeal to history buffs. Change things up with a short trip to Santuario de Santa Luzia in Viana do Castelo (about 1h 15 min away). And it doesn't end there: admire the landmark architecture of Palacio da Bolsa, learn about winemaking at Graham's Port Lodge, stop by Garrafeira do Carmo, and snap pictures at Ponte de Dom Luis I.

For other places to visit, traveler tips, maps, and other tourist information, go to the Porto tour itinerary tool.

Toronto, Canada to Porto is an approximately 10-hour flight. You'll lose 5 hours traveling from Toronto to Porto due to the time zone difference. Expect slightly colder temperatures when traveling from Toronto in July; daily highs in Porto reach 28°C and lows reach 17°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 22nd (Mon) early enough to travel to Tavira.
