Unvanquished City

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Explore hidden gems such as Palacio da Bolsa and Sameiro Sanctuary. Get some historical perspective at Largo da Oliveira and Capela das Almas. Venture out of the city with trips to Igreja de São Gonçalo (in Amarante), Guimaraes (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira & Citania de Briteiros) and Se de Braga (in Braga). Next up on the itinerary: do a tasting at Porto Augusto's, wander the streets of Rua Santa Catarina, pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja de Santo Antonio dos Congregados, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral).

For ratings, maps, where to stay, and tourist information, refer to the Porto trip itinerary site.

Fly from Funchal to Porto in 5 hours. Traveling from Funchal in July, expect little chillier with lows of 17°C in Porto. Cap off your sightseeing on the 27th (Sat) early enough to go by car to Portimao.
