Capital of the Inca Empire for three centuries, World Heritage-listed Cusco is now a major tourist destination, drawing nearly 2 million annual tourists with its well-preserved colonial architecture and proximity to Machu Picchu.
San Blas and Centro Historico De Cusco are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Cusco: Centro Texti Urpi (in Chinchero) and Salinas de Maras (in Maras). There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Sacsayhuaman, tour the pleasant surroundings at exploor, delve into the distant past at Tambomachay, and take an in-depth tour of Museo de Arte Precolombino.

Getting from Machu Picchu to Cusco by combination of train and bus takes about 3.5 hours. Other options: take a train; or drive. In September, daily temperatures in Cusco can reach 71°F, while at night they dip to 41°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Fri) so you can travel to Arequipa.
